Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Yoga Connection! We are a completely volunteer-run organization and everyone counts!

We have opportunities for volunteers in the classroom during our 8-week seasons and behind the scenes throughout the year. Please review the volunteer roles below, then follow our step-by-step process to get involved!

Volunteer Roles

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to class and plan on staying 15 to 30 minutes after class. Our practice space is used as a classroom earlier in the day, so tables and chairs need to be moved out of the way. Our props are stored outside of the classroom, so they need to be transported into our practice space and set up in a circle for practice. Because we do not gain entrance to the classroom prior to 12:30pm, it is a bit chaotic to get all the setup complete prior to 12:45pm for class start. Typically several people pitch in, and we get it done! After class, the props need to be gathered and stored and the classroom restored to its prior state.

  • We need volunteers devoted to greeting our students with smiles as they enter the classroom. The time period before our classes start can feel chaotic as people are moving chairs and tables, and setting up the practice circle, so the greeter volunteer can approach students and guide them through a check-in process. We provide printed attendance grids with the names of all registered attendees to make it easy for them to find their name and check off their attendance.The greeter can remind both volunteers and students to fill out and wear name tags, which we provide.

  • We provide refreshments for our students after class, as they have been attending ESOL classes all morning and are likely to be hungry. Please help to set up a table for drinks and snacks prior to class starting and serve our students after class. Refreshment time is very casual, and it is a good time to socialize and help the students practice English skills. We ask our refreshment providers that all food be healthy; snacks can include cheese, hummus spread, baked goods, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables. In general we serve around 25 attendees. TYC will provide water, tea, fruit juice, and paper goods to help with the serving of refreshments.

  • Our organization needs to raise funds to support the costs of offering free classes to refugee and immigrant women in our community. If you have interest in or are experienced at holding events to spread mission awareness and raise money, we would be grateful to hear your ideas. . Past events have been aligned with solstice celebrations, but we are looking for fresh ideas and new blood to help raise funds! If you have an interest to help in this way, seek out a board member to volunteer.

  • This role should be filled by someone who has experienced at least one 8-week Spring or Fall session with our organization and understands the special magic of our classes! We need “ambassadors” who can visit with ESOL classes, as well as organizations that have access to immigrant and refugee communities, in order to share information about our mission and the opportunity for free yoga classes. In some cases, holding a very brief “demo” of simple yoga movements can be a good way to attract new students. If you are willing to play this role, please seek out a board member to volunteer.

How to Get Started

At The Yoga Connection (TYC), we serve a very special population and therefore we have some special requirements for all people who come to serve. This helps to keep our participants and community safe, and we hope it will also be an opportunity for you to learn and grow with us.

  • After reviewing our process and the volunteer roles, let us know you are interested in getting involved by filling out our Volunteer Interest Form.

  • We require that all volunteers complete our evidence-based Trauma Aware Module. It is a concise, 22-minute video followed by a short survey. Many of you already have some training in this regard, however, it is important that everyone who serves our community have the same baseline understanding. {is this required if they are not volunteering in the classroom?}

  • After you have completed the Trauma Sensitive Training, and submit the simple survey, you will be invited to volunteer with us! We will send you the link to our Sign Up Genius (SUG) form with all the classroom opportunities to serve.

  • Finally, we require that ALL people who attend or volunteer in a TYC session to register for the session. You will only need to register once per season, but we request that you register for each of the 8-week seasons for which you are volunteering/participating. We welcome you to join our practice for any session in which you volunteer.

  • It is a high honor to lead our special population of women through a yoga class. Therefore we require a deeper commitment to our community and our organization for all who lead our classes. We know that there are many highly skilled and experienced yoga teachers in Greensboro, and we welcome you! Regardless, all who lead classes are expected to follow the same process. In return, you will receive CEUs, a certificate in Trauma Sensitive Yoga Teaching and the joy of serving these women!

    If you are interested in teaching with the Yoga Connection. follow the steps above. After volunteering with us in the classroom, you may be invited to teach. Details on teaching with TYC will be outlined in your volunteer welcome email.
